An Open Letter to Virginia Evans (and Sybil )

The Correspondent, January's Book Club Pick for the Perkins Cove Bookshop

Dear Virginia,

We wanted to write you a letter—not a review, not just a quick blurb—to say how much we loved The Correspondent.

Reading it from our little bookshop by the sea in Ogunquit, Maine, felt just right. Your story is a reminder of why letters matter: how they create connection, invite reflection, and linger long after the last page is read.

And Sybil—we love Sybil. Her wit, her restraint, her quiet courage. She’s the kind of character who feels less like someone you’ve read about and more like someone you’ve known. We describe her as prickly, witty, grieving, erudite, endearing, complicated, persistent, bereft, forlorn, candid, eloquent, authentic, heartbroken and generous.

This book sparked real conversations in the shop and heartfelt recommendations to customers—the cause for instant connection booksellers-are-grateful for.

By unanimous agreement, The Correspondent is our book club selection for January.

Thank you for writing a book that feels like receiving a letter you didn’t know you were waiting for.

With admiration,

Your friends at the Perkins Cove Bookshop

Ogunquit, Maine

Postscript: We meet to discuss in-person on January 6th at 6pm.

Postscript two: We wish to amplify Ann Patchett’s comment: “A cause for celebration.” -and thus it is.
