This New York Times Bestseller offers a rare, unvarnished look inside the creation of Nike—and it reads like an adventure novel.
Phil Knight, the notoriously private founder of Nike, finally opens up about the messy, exhilarating journey from borrowed fifty dollars to building one of the world’s most iconic brands. Fresh out of business school in 1963, Knight had a simple idea: import quality running shoes from Japan and sell them from the trunk of his car. That first year, he grossed eight thousand dollars. Today, Nike’s annual sales top $30 billion.
But this isn’t a tidy success story. Shoe Dog is honest about the chaos—the crushing setbacks, ruthless competitors, hostile bankers, and countless near-failures that almost ended it all. Knight writes with surprising candor about risk, sacrifice, and the relationships that became Nike’s foundation: his irascible former track coach Bill Bowerman, and a ragtag crew of misfits who became brothers united by a bold vision.
Bill Gates named this one of his five favorite books of the year, calling it “a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like.” Whether you’re an entrepreneur, a runner, or simply someone who loves a great underdog story, Shoe Dog delivers. It’s the rare memoir that captures not just how an empire was built, but what it felt like—the fear, the doubt, the electrifying moments when everything clicked.
A must-read for anyone who’s ever dreamed of creating something new.

A fresh historical prospective on one of the most profiled companies in the world... [Knight's] voice is real, his story so engrossing, that the reader finishes the book in a couple of sittings.

Remarkable... a book that will be widely read and admired for its honesty and utility... [Knight] details the many risks he encountered, the crushing setbacks, the ruthless competitors and hostile bankers, and the many times he was down to his last nickel.
An amazing tale, a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like. It's a messy, perilous, and chaotic journey, riddled with mistakes, endless struggles, and sacrifice.
A fascinating warts-and-all account of the company's early years... [Knight] opens up in a way few CEOs are willing to do.
A great American story about luck, grit, know-how, and the magic alchemy of a handful of eccentric characters who came together to build Nike. That it happened at all is a miracle, because as I learned from this book, though we are a nation that extols free enterprise, we also excel at thwarting it. This is a great and motivating book and Phil Knight is the best person to have written it.

The best book I read last year was Shoe Dog, by Nike cofounder Phil Knight. As I was reading it, I found myself wishing that Knight had written it back when I was trying to get Microsoft off the ground. His story is a refreshingly honest reminder of what the path to business success really looks like: messy, perilous, and chaotic.
