There are books, and then there are monuments. The Grapes of Wrath is the latter—a towering American epic that earned John Steinbeck the Pulitzer Prize and helped secure his Nobel Prize in Literature. This edition, enriched with an introduction and notes by Steinbeck scholar Robert DeMott, brings new depth to a story that remains as urgent and heartbreaking today as it was in 1939.
Follow the Joad family as they’re driven from their Oklahoma farm by drought and economic ruin, joining thousands of migrants on a desperate trek to California. Steinbeck’s prose is unflinching yet tender, capturing both the brutality of the Great Depression and the fierce dignity of those who endured it. This is a novel about survival, about what we owe each other, and about the cost of the American Dream when it curdles into a lie.
What makes this edition special: DeMott’s scholarly apparatus illuminates the historical context and Steinbeck’s creative process, offering readers a richer understanding of this masterwork without diminishing its raw emotional power.
Whether you’re revisiting this classic or discovering it for the first time, The Grapes of Wrath deserves a place on your shelf. It’s the kind of book that changes how you see the world—and that’s not something we say lightly. Stop by the shop or order online, and let us wrap up a piece of American literature that still echoes across generations.

The Grapes of Wrath is the greatest American novel I have ever read.
A genuine work of art... Steinbeck has written a novel from the depths of his heart with a sincerity seldom equaled. It may be an exaggeration to say that The Grapes of Wrath is the greatest American novel, but it is not an exaggeration to say that it is the greatest novel of our time.
A great book... a true masterpiece.
The most impressive piece of fiction I have read in a long time.
