York County Trolleys

Step back in time to when the clang of the trolley bell was the heartbeat of coastal Maine. Before the highways, before the honking horns, York County ran on rails.

For decades, residents depended on these electric cars for everything. They carried folks to work. They carried children to school from September through June. And when the winter storms buried the roads under deep drifts, powerful snowplows cleared the tracks so the trolleys could always get through.

At its peak, York County boasted more than 100 miles of trolley lines from 1907 through 1922. Then the automobile arrived, rolling off the assembly lines during the Roaring Twenties, and a beloved era quietly slipped away.
